A Story – by Ryan Morris

Erasure poem from “Rocks All Around Us”

Long ago the ball of rock

            melted               millions of years

            Then,

            cooled off. A thin crust

                                                                        wrinkled

                                         the first mountain

                                                            steam made

                                                               the earth

            minute

outside

got so cool

the

sun

            flowed into                                 the

                        low places

            the earth became seas

                                                           water came

out of                rocks

crumbled                 with bits of dead plants

                                    could be

                                    people

                                      depend on

            buildings made of

                                                                        glass

                                    go back to rock

            you           were once

                      metals

            the cars

                   come out           rock                        and

telephone wires. So do                 you

            people have                    traces of those

                first mountains

as they work to tear them down

                                                        Some

                                                        cannot see

what kind                 rock this is!

                                                  Out of

                                                  rock                a

story                                               the world

                                                     tossed                  away

as

                 the commonest thing
